Staff Developer: Dorit EiIon

Date: Monday, March 17th, 2008
School: Fannie Lou Hamer HS
Teacher: Pam Sporn
Classroom: Video Class
Overview:

Pam and I discussed possible projects. I had watched videos created at the school about smoking, gay relationships, tattoos, culture divide, after-school programs in the community, rapping career, video games and their influence. Pam and I spoke about the possibility of creating a video that discusses who creating these projects helped students with learning. Snap shots from existing videos will be incorporated. Pam will out reach to her students to encourage them to upon this project.
Area of concern:
Time frame. Pam feels that the April deadline is too close. She will try, but she can’t promise. She is thinking of creating the film regardless of the competition for the school, her students and for herself.

Overview: I met with the principal, Ms. Deborah Cimini and the school's staff developer, Alison. I had explored the OIT site with them. We looked at the different offerings. After reveiwing our courses they have decided they are interested in the Podcasting PD. We discussed two possible options for that PD. One option is to send 1-3 people to our PD sessions so these people can turnkey the information in the school. The other option is an onsite PD with a minimum of 5 hr. and 6 participants. Ms. Cimini will look at the two options and I will follow up with her. They have written a grant that includes podcasting and video making. We had also discuused what is available in the school and what technology is being implemented. This year they have updated their computer lab. it is very large and have new Dell stations for each student with one server. There is some collaboration but Ms. Cimini is interested in more collaboaration among teachers. We have discussed the possibility of creating an online resource library for the school, created by the teachers as a way for teachers to enhance their research skills and collaborate on a school project. We scheduled a a visit on Monday March 24th that had to be rescheduled. We are scheduled to meet and work on the online resource library on April 7th. Ms. Cimini is an active principal and she is looking to have more technology being used in her building.

Date: Thursday,
School: CS 102
Overview: There are 1200-1300 students at CS 102. The school is Pre k through 5th grade. The school will be going through changes next year as it will be populated with another new school in the building, at some point the school will be spilt up. The new school will be coming with their own staff and equipment. However, some resources will need to be shared. In terms of technology, most classrooms have 1-3 computers, most have internet connection. There is one computer lab that has recently been updated. There are also a few laptop carts that mostly the upper grades are using. The laptops the school had received is part of the R2D2 grant (technology and computer teacher went to training at RETC as part of that grant). During the past 2-3 years equipment has been misplaced, laptops went missing. This year a new procedure was established to track where equipment is. The technology teacher, Alice sent a memo in the beginning of the year with equipment use procedures. She had created a loan form for requesting equipment detailing when and for what purpose the equipment is being asked for. Like this they can see who use it and where. Meeting with Alice Bajana-vega (technology teacher) and Ernest Forrester (computer teacher) we spoke about the technology in the school. According to them, teachers use technology mainly to enhance a lesson. They borrow the LCD and laptops to show students PowerPoint, to show case students’ science projects. There is one lab that lately has been used for equity. However, now the computer teacher and technology teacher are hoping to be able to create more projects with students. Present and future projects include working on planning a vacation, researching information, creating an essay in Word and budget in Excel. Another project is Safari on Animals. Ms. Vega and Mr. Ernest also try to teach students research skills. During testing students come to the lab to use skill practice sites. For example: for ELA students used proof reading. Ms. Vega is familiar with the curriculum and as a former teacher in the school she finds it easy to collaborate with the other teachers. She work a lot with the 5th grade teachers. She either approaches them or they come to her to discuss computer lab/ classroom projects. The school also has a Robotics program. Meeting with Ms. Vega and Mr. Errnest we had explored our site and offering. Ms. Vega had registered to our Flash workshop. She will also discuss with the principal attending our Monthly Coach meetings. I gave her and Mr. Ernest copies of our future meetings. I assisted Ms. Vega with her school Wiki.
Technology Application(s) Covered:
